/Be a Vacation Superhero: Know the Most Important Vacation Preparation and Tips
Learn Survival Swimming:
We cannot emphasize this enough: enroll your child in survival swimming lessons ahead of time so that they are prepared for time in the water. Thinking of survival swimming lessons as an investment in your child’s safety and your peace of mind.
Ditch the Puddle Jumpers: They Are Not as Safe as You Think.
“Puddle Jumpers” and similar inflatable armbands or torso flotation devices create a false sense of security and can hinder a child’s ability to learn proper swimming techniques.
Make Sure You and Your Family Have an Emergeny Plan and Know the Signs of Drowning.
Some parents have reported incidents where the child was in trouble, and they had no idea that their child was struggling and in danger. Every time you plan a trip to the water, make sure an adult knows the signs of drowning and that they are trained in CPR.
Establish and Enforce Water Safety Rules.
Know the depth of the water and the conditions of any water you enter. Teach your child to never play in water alone. Help them identify safe entry and exit points. Teach children to stay away from pool drains, suction, and other openings that could cause entrapment.
Protect From the Sun and Heat.
While not directly water safety, sunburn can quickly ruin a vacation and impact overall well-being. Heat Stroke can cause impairment that could negatively affect a child's ability to stay safe. Hydrate while enjoying the water and apply sunscreen several times throughout the day.
By taking proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with water activities and ensure your family enjoys a safe, fun, and memorable water vacation.
