Strong Moms, Strong Families, Remember To Schedule Your Breast Exam
/
At Little Fins Swim School, we believe in strong bodies, strong minds, and strong families. Every day, we see amazing moms showing up, cheering from the sidelines, helping their little swimmers put on goggles, and celebrating every milestone. You’re the heartbeat to your family, and your health matters.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, But Awareness Should Last All Year.
Did you know that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? I am not trying to scare you, but rather to help you become more aware of the facts. The good news is that when it is caught early, breast cancer is 99% treatable. As a survivor, my heart is to educate and spread awareness.
Early detection truly saves lives. That is why it is so important to:
Schedule your annual mammogram (especially if you’re over 40 or have a family history).
Do a monthly self-breast exam. The best day to check is 3 days after your menstrual period. (Get to know your body so you can spot changes early.
Know your family history. There are some genetic breast cancers, and it is important to know your risk factors.
It was not until I experienced breast cancer that I learned that there are several different kinds. I met two women at a Breast Cancer Survivors Retreat who had breast cancer that was similar to a rash and not a lump. I encourage you to bring anything that you may be unsure about with your breast health to a medical professional.
Prevention Starts with a Healthy Lifestyle
While some risk factors can’t be changed, living a healthy and active life makes a real difference.
Here are a few ways that you can take care of yourself:
Stay active- even 30 minutes a day of moderate activity like walking or swimming lowers your risk.
Eat whole, nourishing foods- include fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
Reduce stress- make time for prayer, quiet moments, and family fun.
Limit alcohol and don’t smoke.
Your kids learn from watching you. When they see you making health a priority, you’re teaching them strength, confidence, and self-care.
If You're Facing Breast Cancer- You Are Not Alone!
If you have received a diagnosis, please know this: you can overcome it.
We’ve seen countless women (including myself) in our Little Fins community fight, heal, and come back even stronger, cherishing every moment. There is hope, there is healing, and there is life after breast cancer.
Live in the Moment
In the busyness of life, it’s easy to forget to take care of ourselves. In every moment, every splash, every giggle, every hug, it is a gift. Take a deep breath, schedule your breast exam, and know that by taking care of yourself, you're taking care of the whole family.
From all of us at Little Fins Swim School- we’re cheering for you, mom!
